FORMER BALTIMORE EDUCATOR IAN ROBERTS PLEADS GUILTY TO IMMIGRATION FELONIES
//January 23, 2026//
Ian Roberts was sworn in as the Superintendent of the Millcreek Township School District in a courtroom at the Erie County Courthouse on Aug. 12, 2020.
Former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent Ian Roberts PLEADED GUILTY to TWO FEDERAL IMMIGRATION-RELATED felony charges.
The plea agreement means he will likely face deportation after his prison sentence.
✅ Roberts admitted to falsely claiming U.S. citizenship AND
✅ possessing firearms as an undocumented immigrant.
He faces up to 20 years in federal prison and will be sentenced in May.
Ian Roberts, the former Des Moines Public Schools superintendent who previously worked for Baltimore City Public Schools, has pleaded guilty to both immigration-related felony charges filed against him in federal court in Iowa.
THE PLEA DEAL INCLUDES NO SENTENCING RECOMMENDATION. But it states that Roberts, a native of Guyana, in South America, is all but certain to face deportation once he finishes his prison sentence for his conviction in the United States.
The plea agreement states: “Defendant specifically understands that Defendant’s guilty plea MAY restrict Defendant’s ability to challenge Defendant’s removal from the United States in the future, and that Defendant MAY be subject to immediate removal from the United States following the service of Defendant’s sentence.”
Roberts abided by the deal and entered his guilty plea at a 20-minute hearing on Jan. 22 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Helen C. Adams in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, which includes Des Moines, according to court records. Roberts signed the plea agreement on Jan. 21.
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Goodgame Ebinger is scheduled to sentence Roberts on May 29, according to the records. Roberts has remained in prison since his arrest in Iowa in September.
Roberts faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
Over nine years, Roberts served as a teacher, special education coordinator and principal for Baltimore City Public Schools, and he was a decorated track and field athlete for Coppin State.
Roberts’ lawyer says sentencing day ‘is most important’
During the plea hearing, Roberts did not speak except to answer questions from the court, confirming he understood his rights and that he wished to plead guilty to both charges, according to the Des Moines Register.
Roberts “accepted responsibility for his conduct,” his lawyer, Alfredo Parrish, said to reporters in Des Moines following the plea hearing, according to a video that the Des Moines Register posted.
“Sentencing will be the day that will be most important, that we will bring out, we believe, factors that could impact his sentencing,” Parrish said.
Indictment followed Roberts’ arrest in Iowa in September -
Roberts, 55, was indicted Oct. 16. 👉🏽He was charged with falsely claiming he was a United States citizen when he was hired in 2023 as the superintendent of the 30,000-student Des Moines Public Schools, the largest public school system in Iowa.
👉🏽Roberts was also charged with falsely attesting on June 5, 2023, that he was a U.S. citizen, and of being an “illegal alien” in possession of four firearms on Sept 26.
(The firearms count pertains to guns federal authorities said they found in Roberts’ car and house when he was arrested on immigration charges on Sept. 26).
His arrest led him to resign as superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools.
*️⃣ ROBERTS WILL FACE NO OTHER CHARGES, according to deal‼️
Roberts faces five years on the falsification count and 15 years on the gun count. He must also forfeit the four seized firearms, according to the plea deal.
*️⃣ Also according to the deal, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa
👉🏽 “agrees NOT to pursue additional federal charges” against Roberts related to the two charges covered in the guilty plea.
Roberts could face ‘enhanced’ criminal penalties in future.
Roberts’ guilty plea not only sets him on course to be deported once he leaves prison, but the deal also guarantees that Roberts would be severely punished if he were to reenter the United States illegally once he was deported. The reason is his guilty plea to the gun count.
“Defendant further understands,” according to the plea agreement, “that the offense to which the Defendant is pleading guilty to in Count 2 is an ‘aggravated felony,’ which means the Defendant would be subject to enhanced criminal penalties if Defendant were to reenter the United States without authorization.”
No federal charges filed in Erie,
after Roberts was charged in Iowa.
*️⃣ The Millcreek Township School District investigated and said Roberts falsely stated that he was a U.S. citizen when the district hired him as superintendent in June 2020.
Roberts has never been a U.S. citizen BUT HAD AUTHORIZATION TO WORK.
His authorization to work in the United States expired in December 2020 — five months into the job Roberts held in Millcreek, according to federal court records.
The Millcreek School Board asked the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Erie to consider filing charges against Roberts and the board considered filing lawsuits.
However, Roberts was never charged in Erie; though the Millcreek School Board in December approved an agreement to seek $25,000 from the search firm it used when the board hired Roberts.
